This one is easy. He appeared to the Nephites in the land Bountiful. There was a “great multitude gathered together, of the people of Nephi, round about the temple which was in the land Bountiful.” (3 Ne 11:1) The land Bountiful was described in the center of the land. (Hel 1:23-29) Nephi built a temple when he first established the land of Nephi. There was a temple in the land of Zarahemla where king Benjamin taught the Nephites. Finally there is the temple spoken of in the land Bountiful.
We can determine from the geography, Zarahemla was north of the land of Nephi and that the land Bountiful was north of the land of Zarahemla. If you have a limited geographic scope to these lands, you can put Bountiful in the center of anywhere you wanted. For some it would be in the center of Latin America. For some it could be in the center part of the great lakes region.
If the land Bountiful was in the center of the Promised Land it could very well be in the center of the United States. For the purpose of looking at this from a little bigger picture, let’s expand the geography to encompass both areas, from the bottom of Central America to the northern part of North America. If you consider that Lehi landed, as Joseph indicated, in the Panama region, and the Jaredites were occupying the land in great lakes region as Joseph indicated, then everything in between would be the geography of the Book of Mormon.
There are those that consider this the most logical approach to Book of Mormon geography. The center part of the land would then be in Jackson County Missouri. Some have proposed that the temple site that was dedicated by Joseph Smith in Independence, Missouri will be the spot for the temple of New Jerusalem. There is plenty of documentation in the early history of the church to support that belief. If Jesus Christ is to come to the temple built in the “center stake of Zion” it could be reasonable to think this is where Jesus Christ appear, to the “broken branch of the house of Israel.”
This of this, the temple that existed when Christ lived in Jerusalem will someday be rebuilt on the temple mount. He ascended after His resurrection from that area and will return there at the beginning of the millennium. It only makes sense he would appear and then return to the same scared spot. The place for the temple in New Jerusalem is where he appeared to the Nephites. The law, His government will come from New Jerusalem. The word, or the truth, knowledge and commandments will originate from old Jerusalem. He would have visited them both.
It’s also interesting when you consider the Garden of Eden where the plan of salvation began was in Jackson County. We know that Christ will be with Adam in the valley of Adam-ondi-Ahman to receive the keys back from Adam at the beginning of the millennium. It would not be hard to believe He came to the Nephites where the plan of salvation began. Jerusalem of old is where the plan was fulfilled.
